Arafat out of the T20 WC and Umar Gul is doubtful
on April 14th, 2010 at 4:02 pmAllrounder Yasir Arafat was on Tuesday ruled out of the ICC World Twenty20 championship in the Caribbean while key pacer Umar Gul remained under a cloud just 17 days before the start of the eagerly-awaited tournament.
Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi says that Arafat is out of the national team after failing to recover from a calf injury that has kept him out of action since last week.
“Yasir Arafat is out because of the calf injury,” said Afridi. “He himself told us that he is not fit after which we had to take a decision,” added the skipper.
Afridi was hopeful that Gul will get fit in time to catch a flight for the Caribbean where Pakistan are to defend the World Twenty20 title which they won in England last summer.
But the captain also said that the doctor’s report on Gul’s shoulder injury wasn’t very encouraging.
“According to the doctor’s report Gul shouldn’t bowl for at least ten more days,” said Afridi. “We don’t have that much time which is why there is going to be a fitness test for him on the 18th. Gul himself is very keen and confident which is why I’m hoping that he would get fully fit.”
About Arafat’s replacement, Afridi said that a decision was yet to be made but added that opening batsman Shahzaib Hasan was being considered for inclusion in the touring party.
“Shahzaib is very much in the picture for us,” he said. “He is a good pinch-hitter and could be useful for us in the West Indies.”
Shahzaib was a surprise selection for the 2009 World Twenty20 but did well in a couple of games during the tournament. He was later dropped by the national selectors but was picked among the reserves for this year’s tournament to be played in Guyana, St Lucia and Barbados from April 30-May 16.
Meanwhile, Gul has expressed hope that he will be fully fit for the World YTwenty20.
“The shoulder is better and I bowled three overs today at the camp off a short run,” Gul told Cricinfo. “Thankfully there was no fracture or ligament damage and, though I felt a little stiff after the bowl, it feels a lot better now. I will start bowling off my full run in the next day or so and I am hopeful that I will be fine for the World Twenty20. There are still three to four days to go in the camp so there is time yet.”
A member of Pakistan’s training set-up was also pleased with the progress Gul had made over the last couple of days. “He (Gul) is improving day by day,” he said. “He made very good improvements yesterday and today and we’ll keep an eye on how he pulls up this afternoon after practice.”
Meanwhile Yawar Saeed has said that we will not take any risk by including half fit players in the team, even if Gul is 90% fit we won’t take a chance.
Somethings happen for the better, Shahzaib deserved to be in the team alongwith Mohammad Sami, even though Pakistan has four regular openers in the 15 member squad, Salman Butt, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Akmal, Shahzaib should open with Akmal and Hafeez should bat at #3, Khalid Latif and Salman Butt should be kept on the bench.
Even if Umar Gul gets fit his recent domestic and international performance is at best mediocre, Pakistan should include Mohammad Sami and keep Gul on the bench they should leave out Hammad Azam.
My Pick
Shahzaib Hassan, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Misbah Ul Haq, Fawad Alam/ Khalid Latif, Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif, Sami/Ajmal.
Gul should be kept on the bench and Butt should also keep his butt on the bench.

Baluchistan Bears have beaten Punjab Stallions by 40 runs in todays match. Batting first the Bears scored only 149 runs. Taufeeq Umar Scored a patient 57 looks to be in good form this is his second score above 50 in the tournament.
Chasing just 149 Stallions got a good start of 45 when they lost Imran Farhat for 11, at one stage they were 83 /3 and it looked as if Stallions will win this match comfortably but Pakistan’s emerging leg spinner Zulifqar Babar took six wickets and demolished the Punjab team from 83/3 they collapsed to 109 all out. Lanky pacer Irfan removed Imran Farhat 11 and the dangerous Aamer Sajjad for 0.
For Stallions only Nasir Jamshed showed some resistence he scored 47.
This is the first domestic tournament where the teams are not lop sided most of the players from Karachi and Punjab are in the national camp for the T20 WC this has made the tournament more balanced. Usually the performance of players like Imran Farhat used to get covered because he usually plays for a strong Lahore team, so far he has failed miserably in the tournament, Umar Amin, Taufeeq Umar, and Nasir Jamshed have performed exceptionally well in the tournament.
The selectors should completely ignore Farhat for the upcoming tour of England.
Qamar
The following link will give you the schedule of Tournament.
The early signs regarding Akhtar are encouraging but I would wait till the end of the tournament to make a final judgement if he keeps up with his form and fitness it would be foolish of PCB to ignore him.
but shoaib is the rawalpindi express..what about all the ppl from pindi lyk me ey? lol. No i agree fawad alam is a good lil cricketer and he is showing signs of improvement so they should stick with him. can you please print a schedule if the pakistan domestic matches being shown on geo super here with the dates and times
Qamar
You will offend the whole Karachi by hoping to replace Fawad Alam
Afridi won’t be keen to play Akhtar and he rates Fawad highly so let the captain play the team of his choice. The matches in America are being shown on Geo TV elsewhere they are being shown on Geo Super, if you have Jadoo Box you can watch all of these matches.
what if fawad alam gets injured? can akhtar replace him? lol. I’m in england..does anyone know where these domestic matches are being televised or if they they are being shown online
The match is over Akhtar took Six wickets out which five of them were clean bowled. Leopards have won comfortably. Peshawar’s batting line up included player’s like Imran Nazir, Yasir Hameed, Raffat Ullah and Adnan Raees all of them are seasoned cricketers.
It’s too late for Akhtar to be called up for T20 WC but he must not be ignored by selectors for the Dubai series against South Africa where Asif can’t play and also against Australia in England.
Shoaib Akhtar takes five wickets against Peshawar, 4 out of 5 of his victims were clean bowled he was fast and accurate on a dead Karachi pitch where over 900 runs have been scored in last three innings.
Bowlers like Sohail Khan Tanvir Ahmed, Abdul Rauf, Tabish Khan and Mohammad Irfan they all struggled and gave too many wickets and failed to take many wickets but Shoaib in two matches so far has taken 7 wickets his economy rate is also good keeping in view the flatness of the track.
Bowling with his full run up he looks a little bulky his run up has slowed down a little but still he is clearly the top fast bowler in the country.
Shoaib didn’t played any cricket through out last year as he was recovering from a knee surgery, it seems that he has fully recovered and his operation has been successful. Great news for Pakistan ahead of Dubai and England series.
The match between Islamabad Leopards and Peshawar Panthers is in progress Islamabad scored 306 in 50 overs. Shoaib Akhtar has already sent back Imran Nazir back into the pavilion. Imran Nazir scored three boundaries of the first three balls, the first two balls were short looseners Nazir pulled them comfortably the third one was a beautiful cover drive on the up and the fourth ball was a beauty came in sharply and nazir had no clue about it and his middle stump got knocked out. Akhtar is bowling at full pace and is back in form.
Maz
I am not watching the whole matches, I just watched the first spell of Mohammad Irfan today I saw nothing special he gave away 72 runs from his 10 overs.
Abid Ali of Quetta scored a great innings of 90+ runs. Tufeeq Umar played well. But in the end it was the veteran Hassan Raza who played a heroic knock.
I am not sure if I will be able to watch all the matches but if Saw anybody note worthy I will definitely inform you about him.
Maz
Big Blow or a blessing Sehwag was in real poor form during IPL whereas Murali Vijay has scored over 400 runs @ 38. They might miss his experience but if Murali maintained his IPL form then India will be in a better position. Gambhir and Yuvraj are also out of form they have selected Chawla as a second spinner I don’t think that their selectors have done a good job. Team India will have to perform out of their skin to be a contender for the title. Instead of India I rate England to be a genuine contender.
I like your lineup but I don’t think Hammad deserves to be in the playing eleven, it’s different to excel at u-19 level but bigboys game is a different league he needs a bit more time. His place should go to Latif.
I predict that India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia are contenders to lift the ICC T20 2010 trophy come 16th May at the Kensington Oval, Barbados where the final will take place at 15:30 GMT!
Big blow indeed for team India
My team would be as follows, now considering the changes!
Hafeez
Akmal
Afridi
Umar
Fawad
Misbah
Razzaq
Hammad
Aaamer
Asif
Ajmal
Wasim, are you following the Pentangular cup, I know its being televised over in the US. Have you seen any good players you would like to share?
Virender Sehwag once again has been ruled out of the T20 WC due to a shoulder Injury, no details have been provided as to when and where he sustained that injury, I suspect he has been dropped mainly because of poor form as he failed to impress in IPL his replacement Murali Vijay has scored 466 runs @ average of 38 in IPL he is in excellent form and India might actually benefit from Sehwag’s ouster.
Stani
If we look at IPL I think Dehli Dare devils was studded with the most agressive batsmen in the game, Sehwag, Warner, Dilshan, Gambhir, and AB devillers but their batting line up lacked classical batsmen who could accumulate runs without taking too many risks and they failed to qualify for semis.
Thats the main reason I don’t want to see Pakistan’s batting studded with Pinch hitters there has to be a balance.
I saw Mohammad Irfan bowl today against Karachi Dolphins, he bowled some good overs but in a few overs got punished by Shahzaib Hassan who scored an aggressive 62 off just 45 balls. Irfan gave away 39 runs from his 6 overs and went wicket less he just have two deliveries either he bowls short or tries to bowl a yorker he is not very fast but does bowl an occasional ball which rises from good length, he is a good prospect but needs one more year to polish his skills, his run up is and delivery stride are out of rythym he can’t move the ball and just relies on his leftie angle, his height although gives him an advantage but also is a handicap as he didn’t bowl a single ggod length ball targeting the stumps which means he can’t get a batsman out LBW or bowled.
Overall it was a good decision to leave him out, Rahman and Sami are far better choices.
But Shazaib proved the management wrong by scoring an aggressive 62 he butchered Abdul Raufs bowling and also played some attacking shots against Irfan but he is mainly a legside player with very limited shots on the off side.
I would have picked Shoaib Akhtar over Irfan he still looks better than the rest of the lot.
I think the team looks good now it will more or less depend on the form of players and how they plan against different teams and apply themselves.
I don’t think Pakistan will go with four fast bowlers, they will play Razzaq, Asif and Aamir and might drop Asif if he proves to be too expensive and play Sami instead they can’t drop Razzaq.
Bowling
Afridi
Hafeez
Ajmal
Razzaq
Asif
Aamer
Batting
Butt/Latif
Kamran Akmal
Hafeez
Umar Akmal
Misbah
Afridi
Razzaq
Pakistan might play Fawad Alam and drop Ajmal to strengthen their batting against teams with stronger bowling. But it will all depend on how Hafeez and Razzaq bowl in the tournament.
It’s a very balanced side with the captain having an option to make multiple combinations.
The only downside I see is if Akmal fails as a pinch hitter we don’t have his replacement. Which Shazaib could have provided us.
Wasim/Qamar,
Yep, agreed, it’s not Butt’s aggregation of runs but his scoring rate that is the concern. That is why I wouldn’t mind him in the ODI or Test sides but the t20? I have seen him play aggressive so let’s hope he does so. There’s no point playing in-between; he should be clear in his mind.
I’ve lost count of who has come in and who is out. I think this is it, so let’s analyse the balance of the squad/team:
Salman Butt, Mohammad Hafeez, Khalid Latif, Misbah-ul-Haq,Umar Akmal,Fawad Alam, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Abdur Rehman, Hammad Azam, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Sami, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer, Saeed Ajmal.
POSSIBLE ELEVEN (not in order)
Salman Butt/Latif
Mohammad Hafeez/Latif
Misbah-ul-Haq,
Umar Akmal,
Shahid Afridi,
Abdul Razzaq,
Kamran Akmal,
Mohammad Sami,
Mohammad Asif,
Mohammad Aamer,
Saeed Ajmal.
To be honest, It’s not as bad as I first felt but I would say that if our batsmen have a off day then we have had it in terms of run scoring because our bowlers, Aamer excepted, are pretty rubbish with the bat.
Ejaz Butt disapproved Mohammad Irfan’s selection and has included Abdur Rahman as his replacement.
When there is a selection committee why Chairman of PCB is interfering in the selection the selection process should be completely independent.
Abdur Rahman although is a good player for the format and is very experienced but the question is the team already has Ajmal, Afridi and Hafeez it is very unlikely that Rahman will get a single match, Shahzaib’s inclusion would have really strengthened Pakistan team.
They selected him without knowing that he has a passport or can get visa and ICC approval in time, and without obtaining approval from the chairman, is this a sick joke or are these guys really that stupid?
Why they delayed the matter for so long? Even if they take Irfan which bowler they are going to drop, Razzaq, Asif or Aamer? They really needed Shahzaib Hassan or Imran Nazir instead they announced the name of a player who was not even in the first 30, the chief selector is saying that he selected him because the captain and coach asked for him, the Chairman is saying that his name is not final as he was not consulted on the matter.
From Day one Sami and Shahzaib should have been in the team, and seems like this new drama has been created to keep Shahzaib out.
KARACHI: Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is looking forward to ‘unleashing’ rookie fast bowler Mohammad Irfan as a ‘surprise weapon’ in the ICC World Twenty20 championship in the Caribbean next month.
But even after voting in favour of picking the 27-year-old pacer from Gaggu Mandi as a replacement for injured allrounder Yasir Arafat, Afridi is unsure whether Irfan will be able to leave with the touring party on April 24.
“His selection in the team is still subject to approval from the PCB chairman,” he told ‘The News’ on Sunday.
“We don’t know whether we will get permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take part in the Twenty20 World Cup because we have selected him from out of the 30-man preliminary squad,” said Afridi.
“Then we don’t know whether he will get a British visa in time to leave with us. We don’t even know whether this boy has a passport,” he added.
Irfan is a surprise selection and only made it to the 15-man squad after most of the fast bowlers included in the preliminary squad got injured during what was a strenuous training camp that concluded at the National Cricket Academy on Sunday. If he manages to catch a flight to the Caribbean in time, he would be the tallest fast bowler competing in the World Twenty20 championship.
“Most of the fast bowlers got injured. We lost Umar Gul and Yasir Arafat and then Wahab Riaz was also unfit. We needed a fast bowler and we were told about this tall pacer, who has made quite an impression on the batsmen, who have faced him on the domestic circuit,” said Afridi.
Afridi himself faced Irfan and believes he has the guts to shine on the international stage.
“I’ve faced him. He is really good. We can actually use him as a surprise package against our rival teams in the Twenty20 World Cup. He is pretty fast but it’s his height that can really trouble a lot of batsmen. He extracts good bounce. We are hoping that he overcomes the few hurdles which are still there and is with us in the West Indies.”
Afridi, 30, also spoke highly of Mohammad Sami, who is now set to finally make his debut in Twenty20 Internationals.
“Sami is looking good. He has shown his strength and commitment in the camp and is bubbling with energy. I’m expecting him to do well in the World Cup,” said Afridi.
Qamar
I think Stani and Maz are not afraid of being proven wrong they will be more than happy if Butt does well but he might become the top scorer he has the potential but the concern everybody is raising here is his SR.
I am sure Afridi and Waqar must have seen something in Irfan that they recommended his name for selection, Shazaib was in the camp maybe he failed to impress the coach and selectors otherwise why they would want to leave a good player behind.
The team management is placing too much faith in Kamran Akmal as an opener which is kind of scary for me I hope he does well.
Mohammad Irfan is a sensational 7 foot left arm fast bowler who has done well at FC level and caught the eye of many!!
Here is some footage

gully nd arafat out:( wel im sad about gul lol
whos mohammed irfan?? played any internationl cricket b4? why didnt they pick shazaib? i really don’t get these stupid ppl lol. i have a feeling butt will prove you all wrong and be one of our top scorers..
Pakistan and Australia will play their warm up matches against Windward XI and Zimbabwe at St lucia both teams failed to line up matches against stronger teams.
It is absolutely necessary that PCB should arrange domestically a series of T20 matches against Pakistan A to make the team match fit and ready for the tournament.
The rest of the teams have gotten some practice through IPL as their main players feature in that tournament Pakistan players will be well rested and not fatigued but lack of match fitness can cause rustiness.
Stani/Maz
I understand what you guys are saying and to be very honest that apprehension is also in the back of my mind but batting is all about current form and Butt displayed good form in Australia and in RBS.
I have a feeling that pinch hitters do not work against teams which have genuine pacers like Australia so we might be better off not playing Shahzaib against Australia and should go with an experienced batsman either Latif or Butt.
Actually it will be difficult for Afridi to pick the openers as all of them were in form which is a rarity for Pakistan. A quick 25-30 in a T20 is equivalent to a 50 in Odi’s the teams which will get a good start during the power plays without losing many wickets will dominate.
Maz
You are right it was South Africa. Hammad Azam should not be in the 15 member squad the guy is promising but is too raw I don’t think he will find a place in the playing 11, I would prefer Fawad or Latif over him and the selectors should include Sami instead of him to give the team another bowling option.
He didn’t impresses in any of the match he played after the U19 WC his bowling is pedestrian and batting is OK but not upto the international standard. Keeping in view the poor form of Misbah and Umer and the inability of Fawad to finish matches single handedly I thought it would be a good idea to include an inform experienced batsman at the top.
Hammad Azam should play in the final 11
Should be given a chance against Bangla in Paks opening game and see how he goes!!
Wasim
You are spot on with your views, however we don’t need Salman Butt to do the job for goodness sake!! Fawad Alam, Umar Akmal and Misbah are well structured batsmen and not pinch hitters who would be capable of doing a good job.
And we did not play Australia in the last T20WC, they were eliminated in the preliminary stages remember!! I think you mean against RSA in the semi final at Trent Bridge where Shahzaib scored a duck
Wasim,
The things is, will Butt reproduce this RBS form against quality international opposition? He’s shown in the past that he gets too careful and wastes balls. I think the effect of the added pressure on the other players because of a player playing slow up top is underestimated. He will drag the whole team down and lose momentum. ODIs, maybe, but in t20s I will have to give him a miss unless he miraculously changes the manner in which he plays. If he is picked, I hope he does for the betterment of the team.
Maz
But what are there averages? they look more aggressive because they hit big shots score a quick 20 and then get out cheaply, Shazaib scored a duck against Australia in the last WC.
In the last WC the role of Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik was very much under appreciated these two players made sure that Pakistan remains on track without losing wickets they score @6-7 runs an over without wasting any deliveries and rotated the strike. You can’t have all pinch hitterrs in the team you need a few players who can hold the innings together.
People called Malik and Younis Selfish because they were not hitting big shots but were rotating the strike and bringing in the pinch hitter at the other end to hit big shots this was their role and if you look both players scored the most runs in the tournament, all those teams who tried to score from both ends aggressively failed because they lost too many wickets. Wickets in T20 hold the key.
If Shahzaib and Akmal open then Hafeez should bat at #3, followed by Misbah, Umar Akmal, Afridi, Razzaq, Latif/ Fawad, Asif, Aamer, Ajmal
The kind of form Hafeez is in he should play @#3.
I think this is the combination Afridi will go with but in my opinion he should follow Younis Khans model of rotating the players depending on the opposition and the strengths and weaknesses of the players.
I completely disagree, we can’t afford to waste time in T20 cricket. Akmal is a good player of pace bowling actually as is Shahzaib, he is more vulnerable against the spinners I feel from what I have seen of him.
btw plz join our league
http://maza786.blogspot.com/2010/04/fantasy-league-for-icc-t20-2010.html
Maz
Salman does has a tendency to score slowly which creates undue pressure on the middle order batsmen but right now he is in form and in the ansence of Younis and Malik we need an experienced player against quality teams, we have Australia in our group and if you look at their bowling they have some bowlers with some serious pace I don’t think players like Shahzaib or Akmal will be able to play a long innings against them, they might be able to hit one or two boundaries and then will lose their wicket that is why we need players like Butt who can hold one end.
Against Asian teams, Newzealand, and WestIndies I would prefer Akmal and Shazaib, but against England, SouthAfrica and Australia whosoever we get to play out of these teams we will have to play Butt.
Shahzaib Hassan Khan should be the replacement or Mohammad Sami.
Salman Butt most definitely does not deserve to be anywhere near the squad!! Khalid Latif on the other hand, has shown some ability and worth in the domestic RBS comp and KCL, his selection is justified in a veritable sense.
Stani
Yes these are their averages in Rbs T20 2010. I think the team management should play the combination keeping in view the opposition. Butt is in form and performed well in Australia, he should play against Australia he has the ability to play long innings and has the ability to score against good bowlers, the pinch hitters won’t be successful against Australian pace bowlers and the team will get under pressure, it’s absolutely imperitive to get a good start against Australia without losing too many wickets.
Shahzaib and Khalid Latif are both good some of the shots Shazaib played in RBS were worth watching he has great bat speed and plays the ball late like Inzamam the problem is that he doesn’t go beyond 20′s and thats the part where he needs to concentrate and improve.
Khalid played at least two good innings in RBS cup he looked really good but has one weakness can’t play an out swinger doesn’t pick the movement and once he gets committed to the shot he goes for it.
It will be hard for Fawad Alam to be in the playing 11 only if they opt to rest Ajmal then he can play.
I would prefer Akhtar anyday over a half fit Umar Gul. He played only one match in RBS to 20 gave away only 20 runs and took the wicket of inform Hafeez on the first ball he bowled, knocked his middle stump out with a fast inswinger.
Wasim,
Is this Butt’s and Latif’s averages in t20s? I have a funny feeling our friend Akhtar may make an appearance! If it came down to Butt or Latif then it would have to be Latif for me. Butt just seems too one dimensional….off side.
I know what you’re saying about Shahzaib. They played him before, he did alright and then just disappeared. He looked like a very strong young man to me with a wide range of shots. Needs to practice his catching though! I remember him dropping a dolly.
Definitely Misbah and Umar have to step up. They have to take that Yousuf/Younis ODI mantle.
Qamar,
I fear if we open with Butt then he will just stifle the flow of the innings putting other batsmen under pressure. He gets too caught up in wanting to make a decent score for himself and doesn’t look at the effect of his slow innings on the other batsmen.
Qamar
Salman Butt can be tried against Australia where we might need a classical opener to get a solid start bet against the rest of the teams it should be either Shahzaib or Kamran Akmal. Against stroger teams Pakistan can leave Ajmal out as Hafeez is also a very good bowler and we can add another Batsman.
for me the line up should be butt and hafeez opening with umar akmal at 3 followed by misbah and kamran at 4 and 5. shahid bhai at 6 nd lala at 7. aamer no 8, umar gul/sami 9, asif 10 nd ajmal 11.
Stani
PCB is replacing Arafat with Shahzaib, Afridi demanded Sami and Shahzaib immediately after the team was announced. I think if Gul failed the second fitness test then he will for sure get replaced by Sami or maybe by Shoaib Akhtar, he is going to lead Islamabad Leopards on the 19th against Punjab Stallions if he proved his fitness level then he will also be in contention.
Both Butt and Khalid Latif are in good form. Khalid Latif averaged 59 and Butt averaged 37 whereas Shahzaib 28. Khalid and Butt also scored at a decent strike rate.
I only backed Shahzaib because we can’t depend on just Kamran Akmal for a fast start Umar Akmal’s form is also not grea,t the absence of Younis and Malik has left a great void, We have too many pinch hitters in the team we need a few classical batsmen for the middle overs otherwise this team won’t survive 20 overs.
Hafeez, Umar Akmal and Misbah will form the middle order if any one or two of them don’t click then Butt and Latif can replace them I would prefer Latif or Butt over Fawad Alam but Afridi will play Fawad.
If Pakistan has to win this tournament then Misbah and Umar Akmal will have to play a leading role.
In regards to a replacement for Arafat, maybe Sami will get his chance, as we did speak of this scenario before. If Gul doesn’t make it then Shahzaib and Sami would be good replacements for Gul and Arafat. If they replace Arafat with Shahzaib, they are merely saying to us that there was no point picking Butt and Latif because they are not suited to that game. Even in Afridi’s statement about Shahzaib above, that he’s a pinch hitter, gives us an idea that the captain has looked at the batsmen and thought hold on a minute, is this a t20 batting line up or a Test batting line up.
I think Gul played in a game after the injury scare no?
Agree about Butt and Latif in this form of the game.
