Seven players made centuries in the first test against SriLanka but all the cricket pundits were too quick to shower accolades on Dravid’s innings. What was so special in Dravid’s innings that it deserved that many accolades? It was scored on a placid track against a depleted SriLankan pace attack, the only positive one can imagine about his innings was that he alongwith Dhoni saved India from a precarious position but then didn’t the two JayaWardne’s scored a pile of runs under pressure chasing a 400+ Indian total.
It is often seen that a good performance by one of the “Big three” in Indian batting line up often eclipses the performance by the players of the opposing team in media even if that performance gets wasted in a losing cause, the recent 175 by Sachin against Australia was one such example.
India went in this test match with a confused strategy, they assumed that batting was their team’s strength but by preparing a placid track not only they made their already struggling bowling attack toothless but also negated their main assumption that batting was their main strength. If India had to rely on their much coveted batting line up then they should have prepared supporting tracks to ensure that their struggling bowlers can run through the opposition’s batting. But the Indian strategists wanted to have both sides of the coin they wanted to make things easy for their batsmen by neutralizing Muralitharan and the SriLankan seamers but they under estimated SriLankan batting and over estimated the capabilities of Indian bowlers.
The Indian team is regarded as the top test team in the world and the only rival of the Aussies in this format but if BCCI kept on preparing such tracks for test matches in India nobody is going to accept this assertion. The poster boys of Indian cricket Sachin and Dravid will continue to score many centuries like this on the domestic dust bowls for many years to come and that might keep the fans happy but test cricket might not survive in India due to these tactics.
In subcontinent both India and Pakistan are guilty of preparing placid tracks for their home matches, SriLanka prepared supporting wickets in every test match against Pakistan in their last home test series and as a result the matches were evenly contested and the fans enjoyed the whole series just like Odis.
To save test cricket the fans should condone such pitches as much as they can, even the most avid test cricket fans would not like to waste five days to watch a meaningless contest.
