Champions trophy-2009 Group A preview
on September 12th, 2009 at 9:44 amThe 6th Champions trophy tournament will`commence on Sept 22nd with a match between defending champs Australia and last edition’s runner up West Indies. Both teams are in group A alongwith India and Pakistan.
Historically West Indies are the most successful team in this event they have won the tournament only once but have reached the finals on three occasions. It’s a shame that this time due to a recent contract dispute with WIPA, WICB is sending a second string team to South Africa.
The contest in Group A will be mainly between India, Pakistan and Australia.
All three teams are quite evenly poised and can beat each other on their day, I would have given India a clear advantage but the absence of Zaheer Khan and Sehwag is going to hurt them, their batting looks good on paper but given the vulnerability of their younger batsmen against the shortpitched stuff and the fact that the tournament is going to take place in South Africa where the wickets are hard and bouncy I’m not willing to give them the favorite status especially when both Pakistan and Australia possess a good pace battery. Indian team is getting some valuable match practice in the on going tri-series in Srilanka that might help them to shed some rustiness and fine tune their combination for CT.
Australian team is looking good in the Odi’s against England, Cameroon White, Ferguson and Watson are in form, their bowling also looks good especially when Brett Lee has regained his form the Spin department is still weak but in South African conditions they might not feel this deficiency. The Australians are the defending champions in this tournamnet but I think they lost their default favorite status a year ago, although they still are a good team capable of winning but they have lost their extra punch both in batting and bowling they are no longer invincible.
Pakistan team looks quite balanced on paper, the absence of a genuine opener in the line up is a concern but I think Nazir and Akmal will do a good Job they will have their ups and downs but both players will make maximum use of the initial power plays. Most people consider Asif’s return has strengthened Pakistan’s pace attack, I have my reservations about it he is only a new ball bowler after his first four overs in Odis he becomes a liability he never had the ability to swing the old ball his slow speed and straight line makes him an easy target, I think Pakistan made a mistake by dropping Razzaq who was doing fine both with the bat and the ball. Asif can still prove to be handfull if the conditions suited his bowling.
Pakistan’s main worry is it’s batting they won the T20 WC just on the back of Afridi and Akmal, but to win in the 50 over format their experienced players like Yousaf, Younis and Misbah will have to perform consistently.
Afridi in a recent statement has said that if he couldn’t perform well in the Champion’s trophy tournament he will consider retirement seriously.”
I don’t know what to make of this statement, I think within the lines he is he trying to set a standard for his team mates that those players who do not perform well should retire, for years Afridi remained in the team just on the basis of his popularity I don’t think he seriously believes in what he stated otherwise he should have retired long ago.
Pakistan will depend a lot on Afridi and Ajmal both bowlers have this amazing wicket taking ability which chokes down the opposition in the middle of the innings, I think Pakistan has an edge over both India and Australia in the spin department. In my opinion Pakistan’s chances of reaching semi finals largely depend on how well they bat against the Australians. The Indians play spinners well but the Australians scumbed against Afridi and Ajmal in Dubai and they might struggle again against these bowlers but to win the batsmen will have to do their part.

Wasim thanks for comments insALLAH pakistan will be the champion of icc champions trophy 2009.
Sonia welcome to cricketfiles and hope you will keep on coming back.
It was a great win. Malik and Yousaf played a classic innings. If the middle order kept on performing Pakistan will lift the trophy.

Pakistan will be riding high after their 20/20 win.
50 over cricket is a different game and whilst they clearly have the talent to win, realistically anyone of 6 sides coul win thre Champions Trophy.
Eid Mubarak to everyone.
Eid Mubarak folks!

Welcome to cricketfiles. I appreciate your patriotic remarks, but lets be realistic T20 and Odi are two different formats Pakistan is good at T20 but for Odi’s they do not have a good team. Unless Mohammad Yousaf, Younis Khan and Misbah return to form we cannot win this trophy in T20′s you can win the match on the back of one or two players but in Odi’s it’s very difficult, the middle order plays a key role in building the whole innings and unfortunately if we look at the recent performance of Misbah, Yousaf, Malik and Younis it’s not very encouraging.
If these players return to form then I have no doubt in my mind that we can compete and win.
And we hope the Best from our PAK team.
DO u all think that we named it “CHAMPIONS TROPHY”.
SO IT SHOULD BE OUR TROPHY.
WE R THE CHAMPS.

I think Zaheer’s absence is a huge blow to India he has developed some clinical accuracy and is very consistent. I like Nehra but one day he bowls great and the next he looks ordinary the consistency is not there. RP and Ishant have not been able to develop their limited overs game both lack variety. But I think in South Africa where the wickets are going to assist fast bowlers their performance might improve.
India’s strategy of using one part time spinner might work against the non Asian countries but against Pakistan and SriLanka they will have a problem.
The conditions in South Africa suit Australia the most out of the group A teams their pace battery has gotten in form just at the right time but I am not sure if their younger players are ready to handle Harbhajan, Afridi and Ajmal. Their chances will largely depend upon how their batsmen perform against quality spinners.
India is in the hot water with respect to their seam bowling and fielding. What made them quite strong last year was the fact that their pace attack was falling in line and now it is a bit rudderless.
Pakistan might have the edge in spin as India is not likely to field 2 proper spinners and would prefer using their part-timers.
You are right on the Windies actually doing very well in the CT. As of matter of fact, New Zealand too made it to a couple of finals.

I haven’t read anywhere about Ponting Skipping Champions trophy, As regards India they don’t have the bowling to win this trophy their batting may or may not click the consistency and the extra punch which Sehwag and Gambhir can deliver will be missing. Pakistan should not be fearful of India or Australia they should be fearful of the under performers in the team. If the players played to their potential we will reach the Semis.
Why they dont just draft in our ex-players e.g. Waqar, Wasim, when the bowling coach aint there, I don’t know. It’s a short tournament, it can easily be done.
Is Ponting gonna skip the tournament? I cant remember.
India still have the potential to click though and that’s the fear.
You are right Stani and I no body knows about the preperations of Pakistan team normally we go into a tournament after playing a domestic tournament, and their hasn’t been anybody to take care of the fast bowlers even Aqib was not working with the team. Asif can’t play the first game as his ban will be lifted after the first game but anyways we won’t be needing him against second string West Indies.
Australia have dominated England and their pacers are in good form but I think their batting line up might struggle against the likes of Afridi and Ajmal.
India is struggling in the absence of Gambhir, Sehwag and Zaheer.
So if we sort out our batting problems we have a good chance to qualify for the semis.
For the first time in a while I’m looking forward to a Champions Trophy tournament.
I’m slightly worried we’re going in undercooked whilst everyone else is getting games…especially those in our group. The Aussies will head into it straight off a 0-7 whitewash of England and will be full of confidence.
Will be interesting to see the first line up as they’ve said they’re not going to include Asif for the first game.
