Abdul Qadir, Pakistan’s chief selector, says new captain Younis Khan will be given “enough room” in selection matters.

Disagreements between the selectors and team management have been an issue in the past few years, but Qadir says he doesn’t mind involving the captain and coach as long as the “best team is selected”.

Qadir said Younis, who took over from Shoaib Malik last month, will be consulted along with coach Intikhab Alam. “We will give Younis enough room,” Qadir told the News. “As captain, he is our general in the field and should have a say in selection matters.

“We are all on the same side, aren’t we,” he said. “All of us are working to ensure that Pakistan give their best on the field and that target can only be achieved if we work together.” During the recent series against Sri Lanka, the team management had been given the final say in selecting the playing XI.

Why the same power was not given to Malik?

I am happy that Younis is getting all these powers now he will have no excuse for poor performance.

Qadir & co were mainly responsible for poor selection in the ODi series against SriLanka, they dropped inform batsmen like Nasir Jamshed and Fawad Alam, they also picked out of form bowlers like Tanvir and Shoaib Akhtar and completely ignored some of  the star performers in the domestic season.

Similar tall claims of fair and strong selection were made by them before the Odi series but the selection done was far from fair and was done on seniority basis and performance was not a factor.

Malik should have resigned himself instead of captaining a side full of under performing seniors and saved himself from complete disgrace but he gave the job more importance than his self pride.

In this respect Younis has a reputation of being strong headed, it’s yet to be seen how he reacts to the unfair selection done by the selection committee. On one hand he is very close to some of the senior players and was leading them in their quite revolt against Malik and on the other hand he has an alliance with the seniors, if he chooses to play some of the out of form senior players the performance of the team will dip further, already players like Faisal Iqbal have been included in the camp for the upcoming test series, it’s yet to be seen if Faisal makes it to the final eleven. If Younis does support the inclusion of Afridi, Faisal Iqbal and Kamran Akmal in the test team then it will be clear that his earlier reluctance to captain Pakistan team was not because of a disagreement over selection powers but was for some other unknown reasons.

Younis has already given a statement that the selection should be done on the basis of performance in the QA trophy but if the selectors are ging to follow his instructions none of the senior players will get selected.
