SOUTH AFRICA needs 153 runs to win heading into the final day of the second Test at the MCG. After Australia was dismissed for 247 in their second innings, the Proteas were 0-30 at stumps today.
Smith was batting at 25 and Meckenzie at 3.
Tomorrow if it doesn’t rain, or the Protea batting line up doesn’t commit collective suicide then in all likelihood Australia will lose its first home test series since 1993 when they lost against West Indies.
If there were any doubts after poor showings against India tomorrow’s result will clear them, and Australia will officially be dethroned their long reign as the undisputed champs of world cricket will come to an end.
It was a great accomplishment, but for now this Australian team needs to be regrouped and re-organized if they are going to pose any serious challenge to any of the top 5 teams.
Hayden needs to retire he has scored only 313 runs in last eight matches, Symonds is no longer the same player he should be dropped, Lee needs to be rested until he regains form, a quality spinner is desperately needed.
Although Australia will remain #1 in ICC rankings for some time but the race between India and South Africa has begun to claim that #1 spot, which team is the unofficial champion of test cricket is it India or South Africa?
After the Border-Gavaskar series the pundits were quick to crown the Indian team as the new un official champs, but the South African victory in Australia is for sure going to make everyone reconsider especially when it was achieved with much more ease and was done in Australia, South Africa also won a match in India this year and Indian team performed poorly against Sri-lanka in my opinion South Africa is looking good for the title, if we look at the composition of both teams they are evenly matched up, South Africa having an edge in pace bowling and India having an edge in the batting but South Africa is not going through transition like India most of their players are young.
What do you think? who is going to be the next champ?
