IPL’s Salary cap of $ 5 mil will soon be a thing of the past, it is being rumored in players circles that the IPL management is considering to scrap the salary cap rule in near future, if such a move becomes reality in future then top players will be able to sign astronomical IPL contracts worth upto $15 mil.

Leading International players especially those who perform well in this years IPL league may get massive pay rises.

Dhoni told one senior Australian player last week that he had been promised the IPL’s biggest names could expect extraordinary contracts of up to $14-15 million after the salary cap is abolished.

Modi only set the salary cap for the first season of the IPL because he did not want only a select few rich teams who could win the title. There are several IPL franchises which are in a deep financial black hole, although the attendance in the stadiums in virtually all the IPL matches has been full or near capacity but according to some sources ticket sales have not been encouraging, and the franchises in the first season are issuing complimentary passes in bulk to make the atmosphere electric.

No body knows how successful IPL  will be for its franchisees, and will this abolishing of salary caps will materialize or not it will all depend upon the  Balance sheets of the current franchises after the first season.

I think that since there is a huge disparity between the financial liquidity of different franchises, if the salary cap rule is abolished it will make the tournament lopsided as cash rich teams will buy out the best players and the franchises with cash troubles will become further weak.

There were already fears the huge IPL player payments could fracture world cricket by forcing current internationals to consider their future and potentially trade their national cap for a financial bonanza in the IPL.

International players could be forced to choose between country and dollars next year with the 2009 IPL set to clash with Australia’s Test tour of South Africa and a one-day series in Pakistan.

If the IPL salary cap is quashed, as expected, leading international players could earn more for seven weeks IPL work than they could in a whole career toiling for Australia or their respective country.

With more competition on the horizon in the coming years IPL management has made a smart move to lure the top players, it will be hard for EPL, PPL or any other new league to attract top International players unless their salaries are competitive with IPL or their schedule doesn’t clash with IPL.

Do you think these massive pays to cricketers by these T20 leagues will eventually destroy Test and ODI cricket? or do you believe that these T20 leagues after a severe bidding war with each other will suffer a financial death?
